code art

I'm on a mailing list called o-o@konf.lt
When I subscribed to it, I'd seen a few interesting (abstract) ascii art posts to another mailing list I was on, the We_list. (we were one of my favorite drum and bass groups a few years ago, from brooklyn, I believe)
This isn't your typical ascii art, by any other measure than 'modern art' in the form of text, it would probably not even be recognized as being creative:

So I subscribed to this list, and WTF?

..

and even more, I enjoy looking at it!
I don't know why, it's not a particularly pleasent read.
Probably for the very reason that it makes me wonder, "what the hell are they doing?"
I enjoy abstract expression, whether music, film, performance, (art), whatever...
But for the life of me, I can't find anything worthy of praise in these posts, other than the fact that I find them interesting for some reason:

So I decide to look up one of the people who frequently posts this "code art",

... the name johan meskens sounds obscure,

... http://users.tijd.com/~tdn43836/pages/gallery/meskens01.html

Wow, this guy's really good!

So now I feel I'm onto something.. but I don't know what.

I'd thought of unsubscribing before, but decided not to. There's no harm in seeing what they're up to, and it's not like I'm being spammed..
until tonight.

So what's strange is that I've _never_ received spam from the far east before,

http://www.zocle.net/j-spam.html

But...

why this list? are those people really that hip that they want to solicit their products to abstract art (to the Nth degree) fans?

And it's funny, because I feel lucky to have gotten it.

Weird.
